THE PESSIMIST:

Bille Brown as BOB in THE PESSIMIST

We have taken on an exciting new project, a short film on 35mm film gauge which is to be co-directed and co-produced between Michael Mier and Lav Bodnaruk, with Lav Bodnaruk as the film's director of photography.

Michael and Lav have worked on a number of projects together in the past, not only as co-producers but as creatives as well - constantly overlooking each other's work and assisting in any way possible, from co-writing scripts and suggesting scenes in the pre-production, to giving one another input in the post production and having a say in the final cut - weather it be on a short film, video clip, TVC or a feature film.

Stepping onto a project as co-directors does not appear to be any different to their usual way of working - other then the fact that they are to wear the same title on the set.

"The Pessimist" was written by James Lindsay, a school teacher from North QLD. Starring in the film are Bille Brown, Mungo McKay, Matias Stevens, Leilani Watt, Catherine Terracini and many others. First images can be seen on the film's official web site.

Our post production is well under the way as we hope to have the film finalized in time for our annual Xmas party. Owen and Warren from Regatta Studio have just jumped on board of the project as the music composers, whilst Joe Media is handling the SFX work.

Thank you to all the cast and crew who have made this short film possible! We are extremely proud of it and hope that the end result will speak for itself as we market international and domestic film festival circuit in the near future.

Thank you

AFFAIR:

2008, Lav Productions - Mirko Grillini as Vincent (DOP Paul Seipel)

SYNOPSIS: Affair is an intimate look into a married couple’s life and a chance for a viewer to analyse their relationship using Sigmund Freud’s theories of guilt and understanding of an unconscious mind.

------

From the very start we knew that Mirko Grillini (pictured above) would play the role of Vincent in the film, as it was written with Mirko in mind. I had worked  with Mirko on couple of other projects before hand - Translation and A Difference in Shadow, and I was certain that we would get the same amount of devotion from him on this project as we did on the other two. What is more important is that I knew that Mirko would trust me as a director, and that together we could develop the character of Vincent further.

2008, Lav Productions - Mirko Grillini as Vincent (DOP Paul Seipel)

The casting process gave us a pleasant surprise when Mirko's wife, Amanda Grillini auditioned for the short. In the film, the character of Vincent and Monica are a married couple who have this rather intimate, personal and very confronting conversation in which they analyse Monica's dream, their past and present relationship together. Possibly due to the fact that they are a married couple and that they have this unbelievable chemistry and a bond between them already, or perhaps just because they are both so God dam good at what they do, when Mirko and Amanda performed the scene before me for the first time, I was left speechless! It really felt like I was watching a moment in someone's life, where each word and each line, each mannerism and movement seemed incredibly natural.

2008, Lav Productions - Amanda Grillini as Monica (DOP Paul Seipel)

Both Mirko and Amanda helped us in assisting with the casting process when it came to the auditions for the other two roles in the film. Soon enough, we met Evert McQueen and Nicole Dixon, two incredibly talented and devoted actors who impressed us with their auditions and who kept delivering with every rehearsal. They got along fantastically with Amanda and Mirko, and each other, and the rehearsals quickly became my favourite part of the week, as I would look forward to workshopping these characters with the actors that enabled me to bring them alive. For this reason, it was no surprise that our production went down so smoothly, without any hiccups.

2008, Lav Productions - Evert McQueen as Jean (DOP Paul Seipel)

I feel that this short film was asking a lot of each actor starring in this film, testing their comfort levels with each other and in front of the camera, asking them to bring a variety of emotions to the screen, to change and mould rather quickly and to carry an incredible amount of sub text in each shot. For this reason I wish to extend a huge thank you to the cast of this film, Mirko and Amanda Grillini, Evert McQueen and Nicole Dixon!

2008, Lav Productions - Nicole Dixon as The Girl (DOP Paul Seipel)

This film would not have been possible without the support from all the CREW and CAST! A huge thank you to everyone involved!

Managed by Nick Lavers, Doch Gypsy Orchestra and Friends (total of 27 musicians) perform annually at the Brisbane Powerhouse every October. This year, the concerts fell on 5 different nights, which were sold out in a record time.

Lav Productions filmed two nights (Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th of October) with 3 x Beta SX cameras, recording both into the camera as well as live vision switching to DV CAM.

a live edit directed by Lav Bodnaruk, of a song called Djelem Djelem, the Roman National Anthem, with Goran Maric on vocals and Gerard Mapstone of Doch on the guitar in the introduction. The duo is backed by the entire Doch Gypsy Orchestra.

This song was initially arranged by Nick Lavers for the feature film "Translation". At the film's studio recording Nick Lavers was introduced to the vocal abilities of Goran Maric, the lead singer of Dream Band, who was chosen by Lav Productions to sing this song for the movie.

Since then, Nick and Goran have been able to collaborate further, as Nick incorporated Goran's vocals in couple of other songs that were performed at this years Doch Gypsy Orchestra concert.

The DVD will be released mid 2007.

The following passage was borrowed

Opre Roma!
"Roma denotes them as a nation", says WR Rishi(1).

"In 1971 the International Gypsy Committee organized the first World Romani Congress. This took place in a location near London... funded in part by the World Council of Churches and the Indian Government; representatives from India and some 20 other countries were in attendance. At the congress, the green and blue flag from the 1933 conference, now embellished with the red, sixteen-spoked chakra, was reaffirmed as the national emblem of the Romani people, and the anthem, Dzelem dzelem, since sung at all congresses, was adopted."

DJELEM DJELEM - THE ROMANI ANTHEM
Written by Zarko Jovanovic, 1969
Adopted as the official Romani anthem at the
First World Romani Congress in
London, England, April, 8, 1971

Romani                                                         English Translation by Ron Lee

Djelem, djelem, lungone dromensa                         I have traveled over long roads
Maladilem baxtale Romensa                                        I have met fortunate Roma
Djelem, djelem, lungone dromensa                              I have traveled far and wide

Vi-man sas u bari familiya                                         I too once had a large family
Tai mudardya la e kali legiya.                         But the black legion murdered them
Aven mansa sa lumiake Roma                          Come with me, Roma of the world
Kai putaile le Romane droma           To where the Romani roads have been opened
Ake vryama - ushti Rom akana                         Now is the time - stand up, Roma,

Ay, Romale, Ay Chavale,                                 Oh, Roma adults, Oh, Roma youth
Ay, Romale, Ay Chavale.                                Oh, Roma adults, Oh, Roma youth.

If you listen to the above video clip, you may notice that Goran only sings the 1st verse of the original song. He has replaced the 2nd verse with his own lyrics, sang in Serbian language.

The previous winners of the GOLDEN TRUMPET at the World Renowned Brass Festival in GUCA, visited us in Brisbane Australia during their world tour. On our own initiative we decided to organize a FREE concert for people of Brisbane, in the heart of our city. Damir Sejdic and the 'small' version of his band, took to the streets and performed all of the favourite Balkan brass songs in the city Queen Street Mall.

Tunes such as 'Mesecina' and 'Kalasnjikov' resonated amongst they skyscrapers of the Queen Street Mall.

The event was filmed with two DV CAM cameras and we tested a film grain effect from Boris FX on the clip.
